Alexander and Carfrae win in Newfoundland

Craig Alexander rode and ran away from his competition at today's Ironman 70.3 Newfoundland race to claim his second consecutive title, finishing just under two minutes ahead of Richie Cunningham and three minutes ahead of Chris Legh. Mirinda Carfrae also claimed the women's title with a six-minute win over Canadian Cynthia Wilson - the Australian finished eighth overall in the race. Wreckhouse Entertainment, the organizers of the inaugural Ironman Newfoundland 70.3 in July are pleased to announce new flights to the region. Air Canada and WestJet have both announced expanded service to Deer Lake airport with daily direct flights from Toronto. Air Canada is also introducing non-stop service on new routes for Atlantic Canada, connecting Halifax with New York City, Edmonton, and Deer Lake. About the Race

Qualifier for Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 This is the place where the continents collided, Vikings discovered a new land, the sun rises first on North America, and the people share an unassuming love for life like no where else! Newfoundland has an international reputation for an amazing triathlon experience and the inaugural edition of the Newfoundland Ironman 70.3 will live up to your expectations.

The event is supported by knowledgeable volunteers, cooperative communities, and an enjoyable course. Race day begins with a swim in the expansive fresh water of Deer Lake. The 3-point swim course will be a moving start to your day in the Humber Valley region. No need to worry about swimming in Canada as the water temperature in July averages 19 degrees Celsius.

The 70.3 bike course meanders through the Humber Valley shouldered by forested mountains and the Humber River. The 2-loop bike course stretches to Corner Brook and the Bay of Islands before returning to the transition area at Pasadena Beach. The final stage of the journey features an inspiring lakeside run with a combination of gravel and asphalt surfaces.
