Alternating from a women's-only professional race in 2005, this year's event gave male professional athletes the opportunity to race for a $50,000 prize purse and slots to the 2006 Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, HI. Although it was a professional men's race, there was a lot of female age group talent. Today's top female, Molly Zahr of Bedford, New Hampshire, came from tenth place and worked her way up throughout the bike to claim her victory. Read the story »
Now in its eighth year, the 2006 Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid is the oldest official Ironman on the continental United States. On Sunday the race will host more than 2,000 athletes from around the globe. Included in that group is a strong men's professional field after a $50,000 prize purse. Alternating from a women's-only professional race in 2005 (the women competed in a women's only professional event at Ford Ironman Coeur d'Alene this year), there will be more than thirty professional men competing for the title, including top contenders Viktor Zyemtsev, Jamie Cleveland, Petr Vabrousek, Andriy Yastrebov, Bryan Rhodes, Luke McKenzie and Rutger Beke. Centered amidst the northern beauty of the Adirondack region, Lake Placid is a solid choice as host for the Ironman Lake Placid Triathlon. The Lake Placid course presents challenging sections on both the bike and run courses that gave last year's nearly 2,000 competitors a workout to remember. Famous champions include Thomas Hellriegel, Heather Fuhr, Melissa Spooner, Steve Larsen, and Cameron Widoff.
