Strong Field Assembles for Panthers Ironman Australia

Defending champions will face competitive fields in Port Macquarie

Published Thursday, April 3, 2008

Strong Field Assembles for Panthers Ironman AustraliaIt isn't just the women's race, which includes defending Ford Ironman World Champion Chrissie Wellington, that will be worth watching this weekend at Panthers Ironman Australia - an impressive and competitive men's field is set to line up, too.

In fact, it's hard to say which race has the potential to be closer - which is good news for everyone planning to tune in to our live coverage of the event this weekend. Look for text updates, live timing and finish line video from and lots of pictures of the race on Sunday. Below is a list of the registered pros for Sunday's race.

Defending women's champion Rebekah Keat will certainly have to race at, or near, her best if she is to claim a second consecutive win in Port Macquarie on Sunday. In addition to Ford Ironman World champion Chrissie Wellington, the Aussie will take on, among others, countrywomen Kate Major and Charlotte Paul.

Men's defending champion Patrick Vernay is quite comfortable on the podium in Australia – he also won at Ironman Western Australia last December – but will have to race well to earn another win. Perennial front runner Jason Shortis leads a group of Aussies including Mitch Anderson, Luke Bell and Luke McKenzie who are all legitimate contenders for the win.

While the pros will be battling for a share of the $50,000 prize purse, the typically competitive age group field of 1,500 athletes will be after a coveted Kona qualifying slot.
